Top 15 Independent PR Blogs

Updated at 9:26 EST, 5/7/2007: One of the blogs listed was an Ogilvy blog, so we corrected the list. Apologies to the current 15.

We decided to play with Technorati’s new authority ranking system (which really doesn’t mean anything, but hey, it’s a benchmark) and see who the top 15 independent bloggers were in our field. We decided to throw out the major public cos and Edleman (sorry Steve Rubel), as they are basically a major international firm, too. The key words we searched by were “public relations” and “PR”.

There was a lot of sifting and judging so this is subjective. We threw out generalists and a certain PR blog of questionable repute. We insisted that the words public relations or PR be a part of the actual topic on a somewhat regular basis. Also, English was a must. No offense intended, we just can’t read anything else. So you can see this is really very subjective.

Here we go:

1) Online Marketing Blog (3183 authority)
2) Center for Media and Democracy (779 authority)
3) A shel of my former self (584 authority)
4) PR Blogger (481 authority)
5) Communications Overtones (424 authority)
6) PR Squared (331 authority)
7) Common Sense PR (329 authority)
8) PR 2.0 Silicon Valley (308 authority)
9) Cooler Insights (204 authority)
10) The New PR (203 authority)
11) Marketing Begins at Home (198 authority)
12) Strategic Public Relations (194 authority)
13) A PR Guy’s Musings (179 authority)
14) Young PR (178 authority)
15) Media Orchard (163 authority)

Hiya - Nice work. But, umm, link #1 is in German (?), and for my money, #2 is more like a PR-oriented news site than a PR blog. (But I am biased since these edits would put me at #5!) ;)

You are right!!!! The top one was mislinked, now corrected. Center for Media seemed like a good choice because they are outside the normal authority figures in the biz.

Kramer auto Pingback[...] Quick Monday Night Note The top 15 independent “public relations” and “PR” bloggers have been listed, using Technorati and, as they state, a rather subjective criteria. I love this quote: “We threw out generalists and a certain PR blog of questionable repute.” Hmmm, could this be the certain PR blog of questionable repute? LOLBah. I don’t rank high enough (yet). But there’s a goal for me anyway. *wink*The newsletter, continuing Blogging Mission, Method & Madness, will be sent tomorrow. I’m flattered to be #3, but I know Neville Hobson’s ranking is just above mine. You should consider adding him to your list: http://www.nevillehobson.com.

I felt that Neville’s blog was too much of a generalist blog. I wanted to highlight folks who were real PR wonks. If I had every generalist in here, most of the top 15 would never have made it.

The owner of Media Orcard (only #15!) should not be missed, nor should one of writer/owner Scott Baradell’s other sites, Spin Thicket. This is a really fun place to visit as it is chock full of really good PR related news. I will have to check out a couple of the other sites listed here because the other ones I’m familiar with here are very good, too. Nice picks!

Interesting list, but wondering how you came up with the choices.

In a way, you can say that a lot of those blogs are not independent, because the people work at a firm.

    • Geoff Livingston Says:

A firm doesn’t make a publicly traded intergalactic conglomerate. If someone worked at a firm like that: i.e. Ogilvy, etc., they got ousted.
