Great post! Just yesterday I was musing about the number of politicians jumping on Twitter only to hear themselves talk. They don't get it. Unfortunately, many take this same attitude to their 'place of work' everyday.

Thank you! I'm new to the nonprofit web media scene and I'm getting a lot of support from your blogs. I reverberate strongly with the "two-way conversation" approach you advocate. This seems important for both nonprofit integrity and effectiveness: how do you expect to be heard if you don't listen?

Im just half way on the book and its definitely better than the other business books Ive read because of its fresh and conversational tone. I forgot to bring this up in class but I also sensed the writers are advocating that there's no other or absolute way but to go social media to be successful and companies not on board is destined to fail. Is this a legit observation?

Geoff: Your topic for tonight's class is pretty timely. Many of us who manage Web 2.0 for the government are trying in earnest to make the tools social and conversational, like they're supposed to be. We face the bigger challenge of convincing leadership that we need to converse. I can assure you, it ain't easy! Many of the tools we've created for the USAF were made with the goal of 1) letting the average Airman have a voice and 2)giving the general public (or taxpayer) an avenue to voice their concerns and insights. It might sound contrite, but we truly do want to hear from other people. Trust me, I got sick of listening to myself and the leadership long ago, so anything new is refreshing.
I'll be attending the Collaborative Government 2.0 workshop on Friday (Dr. Mark Drapeau, who you interviewed a while ago is presenting), so I'll be curious what news and experiences are shared, especially in light of Pres. Obama's interest in social media.

I seemed to have miss the train on this book, but with this review, I will have to head over to Barnes and Noble and pick it up. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks, Andre. Glad you liked! It does really get back to basic human rights, human interaction, and simple communities. We need to talk to each other, eye to eye, one to one, or one to the few in our groups.

Great work here Geoff - made me search for my copy of the Manifesto to re-read as I contemplate how this affects the public health world. Important stuff to think about in order to actually make a difference.
