They indoctrinate their charges to the idea that any involvement of someone other than the source for their interview taints the sanctity of journalism. In their view, CEOs should be juggling their own schedules, explaining the background for a story, and confirming facts for them. They also believe that all line managers are incredibly articulate and completely aware of all issues that affect the company, but are being hidden from reporters by evil public relations pros. It's a mindset that has a small grain of truth in it, therefore the myth continues to grow. The fact that a company can handle many more media contacts because it has professionals doing the coordinating seems to be lost on the conspiracy theorists in the media. But the day a company's entire PR staff gets sick, these grinches will bitch and complain about the "rank amateurs" running the company, who don't know how to meet their information needs quickly and efficiently.
