While I don't have years of experience in PR -- much has been writing for newspapers -- you touch on a very interesting point. My professional mentor, accredited in public relations with a stellar career behind him -- he has taught me that a successful public relations professional will be the one who focuses on the relational aspect of their job.

A bit of a rhetorical question comes to mind, however. You mention giving relationships value. That's a vague and sometimes misunderstood (may not fully comprehended) term. So, how do you create value in a relationship?

On an interpersonal level, I believe it's done by appreciating, accepting and approving of people.

This is good blog fodder...look for a more thorough thought piece over at my blog, www.yourprguy.com

Geoff -

Great post. For too long, PR has come to mean "spin, spin, spin,"--try and take a bad situation and make it look good. This came about because some companies (and/or their PR firms) were successful in doing so, and the public has rightly become hardened to any attempts to gloss things over, or take the corporate line at face value.

Corporations are going to have to get comfortable--quickly--with the idea that they need to admit when they've done something wrong.

Whether the lawyers will allow that sort of authentic admission is another thing entirely. PR practitioners who understand the landscape has changed do face a challenge in that regard. For the sake of a business that I really enjoy, I hope it can be done.

Best,
Jen

Lewis: As always, thank you for your kind words. I look forward to meeting you in NY soon.

Rich: An ABC versus APR comparison would be very useful. I look forward to the post.

John: Congratulations, and thank you for this insight.

Geoff -- Great post and a brief comment: A key part of "Dell's incredible lesson" is that we've learned to address any form of dissatisfaction head-on, knowing we cannot drown out the negative with only the positive.
