Adventures @ Google

By far the best part of my recent trip was a lunch at Google headquarters on Monday. Google is already the stuff of legends, trying to change every market it touches, disrupting it, and trying to better the world, too. It’s one of the most desired places to work. Presidential candidates visit there to kiss the brass rings of Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and co. So, given that ex-Livingston Communications flack Emmanuel is in the PR department, I went for a visit.

What an amazing place. It was like some sort of Asimovian utopia.

The place has everything you could want. Dry cleaning? Yup. Gym with trainers? Yup. Free lunches with many cuisines featured? Yup. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? Yup. Day care centers? Yup. Alternative work environments? Yup. OK, you get the picture. It was amazing. They even had this fantastic exhibit there.

Perhaps the most amazing thing were the people. They were happy, obviously brilliant (I felt like a heel with my lowly masters from Georgetown’s Communications, Culture and Technology program). Just talking to Emmanuel you could tell brilliance was abound. Our conversations about PR made me realize that for Google it’s a contact sport. Some of the very best practitioners in the world are there dealing with the most prestigious publications, partners and issues possible.

At Google, they use scooters, bikes, and other transportation means to get between buildings on the sprawling campus. So after lunch, we rode around on bicycles and toured the whole place. It was a blast! And the feel of a special place in the world continued.

All in all, I never thought I’d want to work somewhere again — and believe me, I am not looking — but Google was truly a unique exciting environment. It’s no wonder that everyone wants to go there.
