Book Review: Seth Godin’s The Dip

thedip.gifSometimes a book comes along, just when you need it. Enter Seth Godin’s The Dip. I’ve been battling to get down and write this book, and sure enough it’s because I am in the Dip. Seth’s new and very short book (1 audio CD or 50+ pages) talks about The Dip, a time when you feel like quitting a project.

The Dip helps analyze whether it’s time to recognize your in a cul-de -sac (time to quit), or a true dip (time to push forward and excel). It’s actually a really good discussion of commitment to excellence. This commitment can lead to quitting dead ends, acknowledging you’re stuck (or not stuck), or realizing you’re about to break through if you move through the Dip.

In this case it’s the latter; the short term pain of writing during off-hours, of sacrificing balance in order to keep both the business and the book in the air must be endured. It’s a time to move forward with confidence and excitement. The book will help executives seeking to engage in new media and better their marketing, in turn helping Livingston Communications better serve its clients, associates and publics. It will enable us to be the best. The long-term gain for all parties simply outweighs the pain of this time, which will be over relatively shortly.

Though I don’t know you, Seth, thank you. The Dip was just what I needed to invigorate my effort. If you’re a driven person, someone that likes to succeed, then I highly recommend this book. It’s a very short and worthwhile experience.
